Kyrie disappears in game 4 and Luka spent more time yelling at the refs than he did playing in the game. Is that why he missed the late game free throw? Donovan Mitchell with a late game scratch in what ended up feeling like potentially a winnable game if he played….

With all of that being said you couldn’t ask for a better 2nd round with so many storylines and only time will tell how these games play out.

All right, everybody. Welcome in Season 2, Episode 20 of the Swish List Podcast. Thank you so much for being here. It is the second round of the postseason, and we got a lot to talk about with every single series that you want to see is tied up to two. Nobody cares about Boston versus the Cavs. I'm sorry. Nobody cares. Everybody knows what's going to happen. Donovan Mitchell's sitting out the game. He knows LeBron's sitting there half drunk on a full bottle of wine. He knew what was going to happen before he showed up to, um, but the, the rest of the series, which is where we're going to spend the bulk load of this podcast talking about the Thunder and the Mavericks, the Timberwolves and the Nuggets, the Pacers and the Knicks all tied up to two. And, uh, I don't know if there's, if you can ask for a better second round in terms of matchups, in terms of the quality of the games, the storylines that we're getting to watch, uh, It's been incredible, incredible, uh, incredibly fun to watch, fun to see. Where do you want to start today, Roman? Where do you want to start? Let's start with Nuggets Timberwolves. Okay, listen, America, um, if there's one thing that I'll do, It's I'll acknowledge when I was wrong, okay? Now the series isn't over, but I told you last podcast that we needed to prepare ourselves for if the Minnesota Timberwolves were going to sweep the Denver Nuggets. Uh, let me tell you something, the NBA colluded to get Denver in those games. No, they didn't. Listen, listen, listen, listen, listen, listen, listen, listen to me. Now you listen to me, alright? They played game two on a Sunday night and they didn't play again until Friday. No other team had that long of a break. Not a single other team had that long of a break. And no one can explain it to me in a way that makes sense. They started their series early. Why? Why'd they start it early? Why didn't they wait? Because entertainment, those are two of the top teams, you know, gotta keep, gotta keep the people watching. Then why would you let the people wait five days for a game? Because then the second round had started. There was still first round series going on. Then why are you playing the second round? For the entertainment of those two teams. You get one of the most exciting players in Anthony Edwards. And you get the MVP of the league, Nikola Jokic. You can't tell me these things in a way that's going to make sense in my mind. The only thing that makes sense is this collusion. Uh, no, okay, on a serious note, on a serious note, Denver showed up. They came to play. Uh, they punched the Minnesota Timberwolves in the mouth. Aaron Gordon has been solid. And, uh, this is, this is kind of where things stand for me in terms of watching the Timberwolves. Um, they're a very streaky team, a very streaky team. They're missing, you, you would almost trade one of their defensive players for, um, for an offensive player. When Anthony Edwards isn't on the floor, they don't have a get a bucket guy. Aaron Gordon's really hidden cat and just, I mean, he was what, like 5 for 19, 5 for 18 last game, just really bad. Uh, and so Minnesota, they just don't have somebody they can go get a bucket of than Anthony Edwards. Makes it tough offensively, they find themselves in just these, these bad spurts of offense. Uh, and Denver, Jamal Murray is playing like playoff Jamal Murray. Jokic is playing well, and for the life of me, I can't understand why. If, why go, you're gonna run a set to get Gobert on Jokic, I can understand that. But why is Karl Anthony Towns coming up from the dunker spot to double Jokic in the paint? I, I can't, I can't, I don't understand it. Bro, Aaron Gordon's just catching these easy lobs, I'm like, at what, like, After lob number two, maybe you shouldn't like it's a lower percentage shot for Jokic to shoot the hook over Kober that it is for him to lob it for a dunk to Aaron Gordon. I couldn't and that and that's really the thing with the Timberwolves is they have stretches where they just they look like they don't know what to do with a basketball. That's what they look like. They look like they don't know what to do with the basketball. Rudy Gobert gets it and he's traveling. He's throwing the ball to Michael Porter Jr. He just he doesn't have a post move. It's like when he touches the ball on offense, he's scared. He doesn't know what to do with it. And so he just makes a bad decision. He doesn't have one go to move that he can use consistently. Where he doesn't have to think and he's a major liability. No one should be a hall of famer if they don't know what to do with a basketball in their hand and they're playing in the NBA. Uh, Rowan, where, where are some of the gaps in, in what I'm saying? What are you seeing in terms of, uh, schematically, uh, what are you seeing schematically between Denver and the Timberwolves? Well, I thought I was sure that the Timberwolves had an in for it, you know, bounce back game. But Aaron Gordon showed up. The guy shot over 90 percent from the field. I think he missed one shot. Two, two point three point line had like three steals, three blocks. It was that kind of stat line. Six assists, nine rebounds, 20 plus points. He was the X factor. I mean, you know, Yo Kitch is going to put up 20 plus points and almost triple, double numbers. Jamal hitting his finally shots, half court shot. Oh my gosh. Aaron Gordon showed up and shut them down. Uh, usually in the playoffs, there's going to be an X factor in every single game for the Timberwolves for a few of these games. You know, Nikhil Alexander Walker was hitting threes in, I think it was game one, uh, Jaden McDaniels was really big for them in a few of the games, but the X factor for game four was definitely Aaron Gordon. He, he showed up. Um, but like I said, I assumed this was going to be the bounce back game. But they couldn't bounce back and I couldn't agree with you more with Rudy Gobert. Uh, he catches the ball and he just looks frightened. Uh, it's, he is an anomaly. There's, there's no other player like Rudy. Just, he helps your team so much defensively, but you just see them look at him on the offensive end and you're just kind of like. But, also with Kat too. Cat, like, I saw this video and it was talking about Cat and it was like, Oh, he's just a young player. Give him a few years. He won't make these offensive mistakes, these defensive mistakes. And then you're like, Nope, this is year nine for the guy. Yeah, he's the one that's supposed to be leading this team. He's been a part of the organization for longer than anybody. But you just kind of shake your head and you're like, why did he shoot that? Why, why did he foul that guy? Why did he do that? So the Timberwolves bad games really make them look bad. Like, yeah, but again, they can have a good game, but Ant can go for 45 points and they look bad. The shot that stands out to me is cat catches it on the right wing beyond the three point line, just shoots it and misses the rim completely. That shot stands out to me. Uh, the series really, the series at this point is going to come down to, you're looking at three players, Carl Anthony towns, Aaron Gordon, and Jamal Murray. Those are the three guys I'm looking at that are going to define the series because Anthony Edwards is going to score 40 points. He's he's not Michael Jordan. Okay. But he's, he's early. He's early years. Michael Jordan, where it's like, I'm, he's going to put up 30, 40, maybe even 50 points. But he's playing against a Boston Celtics team that's just better than his. I'm not saying all these guys are hall of famers, but real ones understand the point. Like, you can't stop Anthony Edwards. And I don't think Denver is even trying at this point. I mean, they're sending doubles. They're making it difficult for him, but they understand that he's going to get his, he's going to get his, but nobody else on that Minnesota team is capable of doing what he can do. And it's really a shame because to your point, Karl Anthony Towns is the best shooting big in the league. And somehow, when he has a size advantage, a height advantage, he should have a strength advantage. He can't take over a game. He can't consistently deliver for his team. And so that's, that's really what the series is gonna come down to. You can't stop Jokic, he's inevitable, and that's okay. You can't stop Anthony Edwards. He is a one in this league. He is a dominant force in this league. Hopefully he continues to grow. But the series isn't going to be dictated by him. He's not going to decide how this thing goes. It's going to be if Aaron Gordon shoots 90 percent or 80 percent and gets 5 dunks from the dunker spot on lobs. And if Jamal Murray is hitting these, just the shots that break your back. He just, he makes shots that just fold the opposing team. And I think those three players are going to really dictate the terms. I agree. So how do you see it going? Because for me, I say it's, I think whoever wins game five wins it. Yep. I think it's going to go to seven. So I think for me, it's a bounce back. This is a bounce back type of series. A way team took two games, a way team took two games. So I see it as whoever takes game five probably gets it. Loses game six bounce back, but then bounces back and wins game seven. That's how I see it. You think we're at the point where it goes seven. Um, assuming that bounce back is going to be the timber rules. I mean, they're coming off two losses in a row. So I see it as timber wolves, game five nuggets, game six, timber wolves, game seven, you've got the wolves winning the series. This is a big swing. America. This is a huge swing for Roman. He's never once. Yeah, don't get twisted. I had the Nuggets winning the series. I, I was wrong. He never in his life, never a day in his life, and he's been on the earth 20 years, okay? He's never once said that the Timberwolves are gonna win a playoff series. This is the first time ever. That's true. I'm just curious, how do you feel right now? I, I, I feel sad that I picked them because I was wrong. I was wrong and I hate it. I, I just assumed the nuggets were going to take it in six, but yeah, hey, they still could. I could be right. This is one of those. I'm switching up. This is one of those series where, like, we're just, we're just going, everybody's flip flopping right now. You're flip flopping like crazy. You just, you're just like, the Timberwolves are the greatest defense we've ever seen in the history of the world. And it's like, you can't underestimate a champion. Three time MVP Jokic. Yeah, they can't shoot the basketball anymore at home. Um, yeah, I, I think whoever wins game five wins the series. I am a Timberwolves fan. I'm gonna root for you. for my Timberwolves to win it. I'd love to see this closed out in six. Um, but I, and I do believe that the only way that happens is we win game five and there's some type of injury, uh, of reinjured calf, a sprained ankle, somebody falls out of that rotation for Denver. Maybe we've got a shot. Maybe we try and, you know, there's a shoe issue like when they played the Lakers. The shoes don't get loaded on the bus. I'd love something like that right now. That'd go a long way for me. So, um, tough one. Tough one. But, uh, I'm still holding strong with my wolves. And, uh, we'll see what happens. Moving on, let's talk about the Mavericks and the Thunder. Really weird series. Really, really, really weird series. Uh, nobody thinks Luke is healthy. Nobody thinks Luke is healthy. And we saw a very interesting Kyrie Irving tonight. Where I believe he was making the right play. In just about every situation, and that's why he racked up as many assists as he did on very, very solid passes, great plays. But closing out the game with nine points, and what stands out to me more than anything is you have a chance to tie the game. You have Luka Doncic on your team and Kyrie Irving, and the shot that you get is a three pointer from Tim Hardaway Jr. And I know the refs called a foul on Shea fouling. P. J. Washington. But that was still the play. That was still the play. So who am I supposed to point the finger at? Am I pointing the finger at Jason kid? I mean, you have one of the guys that's hit one of the most clutch shots in the history of the NBA and Kyrie Irving and Luca. He's, he's a clutch player in his own right, but neither one of them has the ball in their hands at the end of the game to tie it up. Like what, what, what the heck am I missing? Tim Hardaway, he fell out of the rotation during the playoffs. So I, I can understand I was surprised to see him getting the minutes he was getting today after some of the things I was seeing from like he hit a few timely shots, but he had an opportunity to help the team and he did not. But again, that goes back to a coaching, a coaching thing. They had 10 seconds on the clock. They pushed the ball up the court and yeah, that's that. Obviously, like you said, they fouled, but it's just so interesting to think that they're trying to get the ball. to Tim Hardaway for a three. It doesn't make sense. But, like you said, Kyrie and Luka were not playing well. Luka talked about it in his press conference. He was like, everything hurts. But he's not making excuses. It's the playoffs. Um, he's been getting hit a lot. But he had an awful game. Lots of turnovers. Shot like 30 percent from the field. I mean, yeah, he had a triple double, but this is what we expect from him, but we don't expect him to shoot the way he did. Um, and then Kyrie, uh, I think this is just testament to OKC's defense. Chet is an incredible rim protector and everybody else played him well. I mean, Cason Wallace did a great job guarding him, uh, blocked a three pointer attempt, uh, towards the end of the game, uh, did a few other things for the team. Lou Dort, just bugging Luka, he's been doing it all series, so I think part of that is just a testament to this young OKC team who has a deep rotation and can put a bunch of guys on those two. And make them miss shots, make them angry, make them turn the ball over. So I think it's, it's just as much OKC playing really good defense as, as it is the Mavericks, just kind of throwing it away. This was a, this was a grimy game. The Mavericks shot 40 percent from the field. OKC shot 38%. OKC 26 percent from three, the Mavs 34%. And then. And then the free throw disparity, right? Both teams, like, great, uh, Dallas shoots 23, the Thunder shoot 24, but the Thunder go 23 for 24, and Dallas goes 12 for 23. And, and I, and I know, right? The Thunder, you're seeing Shea get to the line more often than not. That's the trend for that team. Not saying that's what happened tonight, but that's the trend for that team overall. They've got fantastic free throw shooting from their guards, but that's normally who's shooting those free throws. And with Dallas, you're seeing a lot more of Lively shooting those shots. Gafford shooting those shots and those guys are not free throw shooters But the one free throw that does stand out to me is luca had his he had a chance He had a chance to make a clutch free throw when they needed it most it wasn't a play That was being run for him or a set where lou dortz able to get up underneath him because he is a little bit hurt This was ball stoppage shoot a free throw and he missed it And he missed it. And this generation of players, nobody's gonna call him out for that kind of stuff. The way that they would a LeBron James or a Kevin Durant. We're gonna kinda let it slide. I guarantee you they're just gonna kinda let it slide tomorrow. But this is just something that needs to be noted. Is it's like, this is a series that was ripe for the taking. They could have gotten a 3 1 lead tonight. And you're missing the shots. And your co star, Kyrie, gives you nine points. Nine points. I mean, really bad. The duo did not play well. No, it's not good at all calls the whole game. Yeah, this, this is the time where, you know, the refs are going to call less, less fouls and you shouldn't be worried about the refs as much. Let the coach worry about that. But Luca in the middle of the game while he's being guarded, uh, Ludor will touch him, grab him. And he's dribbling and he'll look over at the ref like you didn't see that. Hey, Luca, there's 12 seconds on the shot clock. Yeah, we're still playing. Can't just stop in the middle of the game. And obviously he didn't do this every play, but I think this just shows, uh, I believe one of the reasons why they lost the game because he's so worried about, Getting fouls, the foul baiting stuff. And, uh, it's, it's basketball. You've got to take yourselves away from, from the refs, especially as the best player on your team. And I think he failed to do that today. We'll have to wait and see what game five brings. I still don't believe in this Oklahoma city, Oklahoma city team. If you're struggling with the Dallas Mavericks, I mean, you don't stand a chance against a team like Denver. And I think a team like Minnesota will put you in the blender if they catch you. So the Thunder have a long way to go. Um, but we know this game five is going to be fun. And I, I genuinely hope, like, a guy like Luka could use those five days rest that for some reason they gave to the Timberwolves and the Nuggets. Um, he could use something like that right now. Give him a little bit of juice. He's not gonna get it, but he, I bet you he wishes he could. Excuse me. Moving on to the Pacers and the Knicks. The O. G. Annanoby injury. It really just ended this team. It ended the Knicks. Um, the Pacers, the Pacers, you could make the argument have the best pace in the NBA. They, they are the best team in the league at speeding up their opponent. And I know they get a lot of heat for the, the high scoring games that they have. But really, it's an indicator of how much, like how good they are at speeding up the other team, forcing them to take early shots in the shot clock, they're running the floor every opportunity that they get, and I'm sorry, but a Tom Thibodeau team playing against the Indiana team with, with A deep rotation, plenty of young guys that are healthy, hungry, and ready to play, that run the floor constantly. I mean, they're barely subbing Josh Hart out of games. Dave Ancinzo, same thing. Jalen Brunson, same thing. It's like, this is, you're starting to see the wheels come off. You're starting to see the injuries add up. That's, that's really what I see. It's, it's not an indicator that Jason, that Jalen Brunson can't do it. It's got nothing to do with the quality or the character of the players. I just think with every significant team that Tom Thibodeau has, The wheels fall off at some point because he grinds his players into the dirt. I could not agree with you more. That's precisely what I was going to say. Um, and I think this series was. Was going to show it. The Pacers have the fastest playing offense. They have the highest scoring offense. They have the best offense in the NBA. And this is due to the way that they play their defense. They speed you up, get you into a quick shot, then they get out in the run. Tyrese Hallenburton is probably one of the best players in the league in transition. Finding the right guy. and you play your guys 47 minutes a game. Jalen Brunson is dealing with this knee slash nerve issue going out of the at the second quarter coming back into games. Uh, Mitchell Robinson out with an injury. Uh, Randall is not even there anymore. Um, and like you said, O. G. out with his injury. You're this is what happens and it only works for so long and it's starting to show up. And again, they might be able to get out of this series. Um, just because the Pacers don't really have experience and they are a succeed. They're succeed for a reason. Um, but it's really showing up and It could potentially lose them the series too, because we we've seen the record with OG, they talked about it a lot yesterday. Yeah. This team doesn't lose when OG plays, but it's because of the way he plays, but the way he plays is also going to lead him to an injury. Uh, Josh Hart's playing well, but it's, it's that time it's starting, it's starting to wind down for them. And like I said, even if they get out of this series, I mean, you go against the Celtics. So, uh, Tom, Tom Thibodeau, just again. overdoes it, and he thinks it's funny to play his guys 48, all 48 minutes and wonders why they're hurt. Yeah. I mean, they're out of forwards. They just don't have any more forwards. Like they run in a bunch of guards. You can't do that in the, in the NBA. Like the league today, low key. It's a big man's game. Like it's a, it's a big man's game. We were, we are literally, we're reliving like the OG NBA days. It's, it's a big man's game and you can win a game with this five out Jalen Brunson style offense. But when you don't have the forwards, And you lose some of that size. You can't get as many offensive rebounds. You can't crash the glass like you could. You don't have the length on the other end of the court. Um, wow, wow, wow, wow. So, uh, who do you got winning that? You taking the Knicks? You sticking Pacers? Where are we going? OG's injury changes everything because new information, new decision. Pacers are my team. They've been my team. I've been saying this since the beginning of the season, but it's true. I had Knicks originally, but I'm starting to like the Pacers. If Tyrese will take 15 shots a game and not choose to take six shots, they can win the series. They could, they could just take the next two games, especially with the injuries going on. They could do it. Um, with new information, I'm going to say Nix in seven. Still, you're going Nix in seven. Give me, give me Pacers in seven. I think that, I think that this is the beginning of the Nix falling apart. Once again, yeah, this is, this is just the beginning of the Nix falling apart. And, and I think, uh, I mean, the Pacers bring in TJ McConnell and he's just running around like a madman. Um, I'm looking to him to have a pretty solid game off the bench and I've got the, I've got the Indiana Pacers actually closing out the series going to be tough to do. They're going to have to win a game in New York, which they haven't been able to accomplish, but with no OG never been a time better than it is right now. That's another good thing about the playoffs is each series is different right now. We've got a 3 1, we've got, uh, it's been home, home, home teams win for the Knicks Pacers series. Uh, back and forth for, for OKC Mavericks. And then we got a ways teams winning for the, uh, Nuggets and Timberwolves. So we've got a bunch of different things happening. So it's, it's. It's definitely keeping things interesting. One of the things that I thought was interesting was Donovan Mitchell, a late day scratch to not play tonight in a game that I felt like if he was there, they probably could have won. Agreed. Agreed. As soon as I saw that report, I was like, so we're just foregoing the season. I mean, Obviously we don't know the injury could be really serious, could be, uh, but it just, it makes you wonder, uh, you're gonna look back on this team and, uh, in a couple of years, it's just gonna be Donovan Mitchell couldn't, couldn't win, uh, but, oh, he sat out. But that's, that's not the story of it. So you hope it's a real injury and not just them forgoing the season, but it, uh, it hurts to see because they definitely could have potentially won that game and made this series interesting. Yeah. Uh, it's a classic Donovan Mitchell, dude. Playoffs get tough. Here he comes. Oh wait, no, he doesn't. It's like the intro to avatar, the last airbender, right? When you needed him most. He vanished. He vanished. Like that is that is the that is the classic Donovan Mitchell. Um, and I think this is a telltale sign of a guy that doesn't want to playing in Cleveland and isn't willing to really go the next go to the next level because Lucas hurt. Lucas not feeling good. Lucas going through it and he's playing. Jamal Murray is hurt. He doesn't feel good, but he's playing. And to your point, we may not know the severity of the injury, but I feel like it's a late game, a late game scratch at some point. You had to have felt like there was a chance unless it's just straight gamesmanship, which Doesn't do anything to the Boston Celtics. Now the Jason, this better be a real injury. Yeah, I know. It better be the, the, the Jason Tatum thing is interesting. A lot of people are roasting him on social media right now, basically saying that he's not a one, he doesn't have a killer instinct. All the same. Jason Tatum things we've been hearing for feels like a decade. I'm not gonna knock the guy because he really does have a complete team around him, but I wanna see more from him. Yes. Is there a time and a place where maybe we will? Yes. Could he be conserving his energy on these teams that it doesn't matter really how well he plays? Sure, sure. But the Boston Celtics are going to the finals and what if you're a Celtics fan right now, the only thing that you should be scared of is you're not going to play a legitimate team until you get to the finals. That's when we should be afraid. Easiest road. One of the easiest roads ever. The easiest road by seeding was actually Denver last year. No team has played that many low seeds in succession than the Denver Nuggets last season. So that's why I need the Timberwolves to win is so that we can prove that Denver's actually a fraud. A fraud that they really are. Only time will tell. But only time will tell. I think Jason Tatum backed it up a little bit today. Um, he had 33 and 11, something like that. Distributing well, but again, he's not even leading his team in points per game in the playoffs. Jalen Brown has still been the guy. Mr. Right hand only has still been the guy for them. Um, but the Celtics team just has too many weapons to drop four games to any team. It's that's really all there is to say about it. If one of them has a bad game, drew holiday might go for 25. So it's They're, they're playing this well without Christophe's poisoning. So yeah, Derek white left the game as well. He was having kind of an off game, but he left the game as well. That's the thing to watch with Boston. If they lose a key player, every series, keep an eye out. Last time, last time they made it to the finals. We know what happened. We know exactly what happened. We know exactly what happened. All right. Around the NBA, we have the most. Uh, boring NBA draft that has probably ever existed. We had the NBA lottery that no one cared about at all. Roman is this, how much of this is because they're trying to do these things during the post season. They're literally competing with themselves versus there's just no players that anybody knows in the draft. That's exactly it. The first point it's why are we trying to overlap? Uh, I never understood this. We've talked about this with NBA awards. Uh, and they do it with this too. There's so much time in the offseason. Why can't we just wait? Why, it's, it's not that much longer. Uh, I, I don't understand it. It's, it could be interesting. I mean, especially with the NBA season just ending, it would be a big conversation topic. The Hawks getting the number one pick, but it's like, Nobody cares. It's in the playoffs. Nobody cares about the Hawks. Yeah. Nobody cares about the Spurs. Nobody cares about the Pistons right now. That's, that's offseason stuff. So, it's, it's just them. There's gotta be some reason that we don't know that I don't know, but I, I just, I don't understand it. Neither do I. Push the postseason a week. Do all the awards one day and do the combine another. Or the draft. Do, do the, do the, do the lottery, and then the, and the combine the other, the other days. Do it Monday, Wednesday, Friday. But they won't. They won't. And it doesn't make any sense. And nobody cares to watch any of that stuff. You're telling me I could watch the Denver Nuggets play the Minnesota Timberwolves? Or, I could Watch the combine, watch somebody grab a read a card, read a card that we didn't want to hear. There's just no, come on, what are we, what are we doing? Uh, in other news, LeBron James brings out his own bottle of wine, looks half drunk on the sideline, just a mess. Why is LeBron in Cleveland? What are you doing? He's he's visiting his museum that they just put up for him. You know, I thought he'd stop by at the game. Oh, yeah, I thought he'd stop by at the game. I was waiting for the players to like say something to him, but it never happened. You know who else? Tyrese Maxey was at the game, too. I saw that. I was looking. I was like, is that Tyrese? He's a he's a he's a clutch sports client. So I wonder if it was like a clutch thing. I'm not sure. Okay. Could've been. Could've been. I'm not sure. NBA players making appearances after being eliminated is, is pretty funny. Yeah. Um, also, I would like to petition that the NBA stop putting freaking games on at 5 o'clock on the dot. I'm literally driving home from work. Can you please give me 30 minutes? They do it every other day. It's 5 and 5. 30. 5 and 5. 30. It's stupid. I, yeah, I don't know why they would do that. 5, 5. 30 is always perfect. Sometimes they even do 6. Whenever it's 5, it's like, it just seems early, but it's probably just because they want to get them done earlier because if you're on the east coast, you're watching a game until 1am sometimes. Yeah. I don't care about the east coast though. Yeah, but people, people do, Moses. People do live over there. Okay. Nah, I guess you, guess you got a point. Yeah. It's a stupid one, but whatever.
